PPAB offers the only Accredited Training Technician and Professional Canine Trainer  certification for professionals who believe there is no place for shock, choke, prong, fear or intimidation in canine training and behavior practices. 

PPAB also offers the only psychometrically developed examination for Training & Behavior Consultants who also support  these humane and scientific practices


Please note, until further notice, the criteria has been amended for "Coaching Videos" for each of the three Accreditation levels. The updated criteria can be found in this supplemental guide. This is due to social distancing and the inability to hold in person coaching sessions. 


What CEUs Can I Use For Credential

Application & Transfer Process?


If you have existing CEUs that have been issued from one of the organizations on our Transfer Matrix then you may use these CEUs to apply for a PPAB credential or transfer in an existing credential. 

1. The CEUs you have  must be valid in terms of when they are issued. Please see the individual Study Guide pertinent to the credential level you are applying for.

2. The CEUs must be earned from education that falls within one of the core categories below

3. The CEUs must be documented so you can upload the documentation to the eligibility form when you apply.

If you do not have enough CEUs based on the above, and you have attended other educational events that fall within our policy, then please submit a CEU application form to request PPAB issues CEUs for this education

We have detailed below the PPAB  CEU policy should you wish to apply for CEUs from an event you attended where the host did not have the event pre-approved. You can apply for the CEUS here

Below are the subject matter areas to which CEUs are issued. These are the key skill and knowledge catergoies for which PPAB assesses competency across all levels.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to provide consistent, clear guidelines that can be applied by the Pet Professional Accreditation Board when determining whether to approve or deny Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for the purposes of obtaining and renewing the PPAB accreditation. *Please note, all events need to have a verification sysem in place to ensure that attendees have partcipated in, viewed or watched the event, webinar of workshop* 

Eligibility and Calculation of CEUs

Educational Events As Approved By PPAB

CEUs may be granted to the following types of educational events herein referred to as "course/seminar":

  • Academic classes (offered by an accredited academic institution, usually a college or university)
  • Tele-classes (both live and taped)
  • Online classes
  • Seminars (live, Live Steamed and videotaped where reviewed content can be verified)
  • Learning Courses
  • Workshops

CEUs will only be granted for courses/seminars whose content covers one (1) or more of the current Core Competencies for which the applicant is seeking CEUs.

Course/seminar content must be based on current, scientifically-valid principles.  

The PPAB reserves the right to request additional information regarding the validity of the content. PPAB Committee will have final determination on course/seminar content validity in order to gain PPAB CEUs

As an Attendee/Participant

  • Attendees/participants will receive 1 CEU per one hour of in-class lecture time
  •  Attendees/participants will receive an additional 0.5 CEU per hour of ‘active workshop’ participation at an educational event. “Active workshop” is defined as a small group of attendees working together, under the immediate direction and supervision of the event presenter or their designated assistant, with set goals to be achieved and approved by the presenter. This type of registration is usually referred to as a “working” spot versus and “auditor” spot

As a Presenter

Presenters can earn 1.5 CEUs per hour of presentation/lecture, when the course/seminar meets the subject matter and scientific qualifications outlined under eligibility.  There is a maximum of 8 hours given for presenter CEUs

Animal training classes regularly offered to the general public as part of a Member’s animal training and/or behavior consulting business do not qualify for CEUs.

Publications

Authoring Articles - An “article” is defined as a researched piece of work, approximately 1000 words or more, with references, quotes and citations. An animal industry publication is defined by The PPG as the distribution of printed or electronic reproductions by an industry organization for sale to the public or as a benefit of paid membership.

  • Authoring an article published in an animal industry or peer-reviewed publication which meets the subject matter and scientific qualifications described below may qualify for 2 CEUs.
  • An author may only request CEUs once per article regardless of the number of publications in which it was published.
  • An animal industry publication is defined by The PPAB as the distribution of printed or electronic reproductions by an industry organization for sale to the public or as a benefit of paid membership.

Authoring Books - A “book” is defined as a researched piece of work, approximately 40 pages or more with references, quotes and citations.

  • Authoring a published book which meets the subject matter and scientific qualifications described below may qualify for 12 CEUs. 8 CEUs may be earned for a book whose target audience is the general public.
  • An animal industry publication is defined by The PPAB as the distribution of printed or electronic reproductions by an industry organization for sale to the public or as a benefit of paid membership.
  • An author may only request CEUs once per article regardless of the number of publications in which it was published

PPG Webinars

  • Presenters can earn 1.5 CEUs per hour of presentation/lecture, when the course/seminar meets the subject matter and scientific qualifications outlined under eligibility. 
  • Each PPG webinar will be allocated CEUs based on the length of the webinar.

Limitations on CEU Credits

  • For each full day of a course or seminar there will be a maximum of 8 CEUs per day
  • Multi-speaker courses/seminars lasting more than three days in length will not be granted more than 36 CEUs.
  • Single-speaker courses/seminars, regardless of length, will not be granted more than 25 CEUs.
  • Members may use no more than 25 CEUs per presenter, per recertification period, unless as part of a multi-speaker course or seminar.
  • Presenters may apply and receive CEUs only once per presentation, per certification period, regardless of the number of times they may present the same presentation within that certification period.

Application and Verification of Attendance for CEU Credit

  • Application for CEUs
  • An individual or organization hosting a course/seminar (“HOST”) may request CEUs prior to the date of the course/seminar. The online form must be completed by the host organization
  • Anyone requesting CEUs must submit their request using the PPAB CEU Application form
  • All ongoing or on-demand courses will be approved for a term of one year, from January 1 to December 31 of the same calendar year, to facilitate re-certification. 

Verification of Attendance

  • For course/seminar events, the HOST should maintain an attendance log for all those attending.
  • For webinars, teleclasses, or online courses/seminars (whether live or previously-recorded) attendees should be issued an attendance certificate listing the approved CEU points
  • For webinars, teleclasses or online courses/seminars that are live, HOSTS may take attendance during the first and last fifteen minutes of the course/seminar to verify attendance. HOSTS may also submit alternative methods for verification of attendance to the PPG before the course/seminar.

Appeal for Denied CEUs

In the event that a CEU application is denied, the applicant may appeal to the PPAB Education Committee at CEU@credentialingboard.com. The applicant must submit evidence and information in support of the application in writing to support the appeal.

The PPAB Education Committee may, at its sole discretion, request additional information prior to ruling on the appeal. Approval of an appeal requires a two-thirds majority to pass. If the appeal is not granted by the PPAB Education Committee the applicant may not reapply for CEUs for the same course/seminar unless the course/seminar content has been significantly altered.
